Uber Buys Delivery Hero: What It Means for Moroccan Expats

The food delivery sector is shaken by Uber's $12.7 billion acquisition of German giant Delivery Hero. Uber, already holding 36% of shares, aims for majority control. This merger, alongside DoorDash's takeover of Deliveroo and Prosus's acquisition of Just Eat Takeaway, creates a platform spanning 99 countries with a gross value of €236 billion. For Moroccan expats, this concentration could have direct impacts. Delivery Hero is strong in Asia and the Middle East, regions hosting many Moroccan expatriates. The sale of operations in 14 European and South American countries to SSW Partners signals a strategic refocus. Competition authorities, especially the European Commission, are expected to scrutinize the deal. In 2025, Delivery Hero was fined €329 million for hindering competition in Spain. Expert Kai Hudetz warns that market dominance often leads to price hikes and reduced innovation. For Moroccans abroad, this could mean higher delivery fees in Europe, the Middle East, or Asia.
