Essaouira: New Hospital in Tamanar Opens, Two Major Projects to Boost Healthcare

On Monday, July 20, 2026, Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch inaugurated the Tamanar District Hospital in Essaouira province. Built on 30,000 m² with an investment of 126 million dirhams, the facility serves 86,000 residents across 15 municipalities. It is staffed by 83 health professionals and provides local care to reduce travel to other areas. Two additional projects complement this initiative. First, the rehabilitation and expansion of the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah Provincial Hospital Center, with a budget of 83 million dirhams. Work starts at the end of July and lasts eight months, increasing capacity to 167 beds. Services will include general medicine, surgery, obstetrics-gynecology, pediatrics, lab analysis, maternity, neonatal care, functional rehabilitation, and orthopedic surgery. Second, a new Provincial Hospital Center in Essaouira, on 10 hectares with 48,000 m² of covered space and 280 beds, with an estimated investment of 890 million dirhams. It will include an operating theater, intensive care units, and boost overall healthcare in the region. For Moroccan expats, these facilities improve access to care during visits home, especially in rural areas. These projects are part of a national strategy to modernize healthcare and reduce territorial inequalities. Expats can now benefit from quality medical services close to their families, without needing to travel to major cities.
